I looked through your gallery, and at 17 years young you are on the right track. Your Kestrel, the two ducklings are the most accurate, but you need to lightly draw in the circle, oval, and triangular shapes you see in the composition first. You then need to position the legs at the right angle and in the right place. I am not saying this in a mean or critical way. I'm saying that even realistic drawing is like cartooning at the very beginning, just get the primary gesture and shapes blocked in first very lightly. Then positions, eyes, wings, beak, nostrils, and then start going darker and into more details. I'm 60 so I know plants, but you can learn about them, photograph them, draw and paint them (sunflowers, nasturiums both grow fast)from life. Once you understand plants, the backgrounds will become easier. Draw some trees from your tree photos while you are watching tv. You took some lovely Scenic photographs of streams and trees. The more you draw the more you will improve. Congradulations on your art job. Keep working hard and drawing, and taking classed in art in Jr. College, and have fun. Don't be so hard on yourself, and don't get discouraged. Having a positive attitude will get you farther in art and life. Talking to yourself negatively or comparing your work to much older experienced artist can only hurt your self esteem and self confidence. Be the very best you can be right now, and draw and paint what captures your interest and your eye. The path to becoming a skilled artist is easy once you realize you just need to do the work. I hope this helps...Annie

I didn't like the kestrel at all to be honest. He looks like he's about to fall over haha. The feathers, beak, and eye I had fun on though. I'm dumb about my backgrounds as well. I've never been able to nail them, probably because I'm hesitant to mess up what I've already done. I should do the background first and that'll solve my problems. I just am always drawn to do the most exciting part of the picture, you know? Too bad the background is so boring to do, yet so essential in the final picture.

Thank you so much for your kind words! It really makes me feel special. It's a real picker-upper since I've been a bit down on my skill level lately. It's hard to not compare yourself, I always do. Then I'll end u getting in a rut, just like now. What you said really helped me :D Thank you so much for saying it. Kind messages like this one end up staying with me for a very long time.

Much love and appreciation,
Nicole

Yes he does look like he is about to fall over, but you are honest with yourself and me to recognize that fact. That's one of the first big leaps to being a good artist. Recognizing your mistakes, and then figuring out how to correct it, but don't rip it up or be mad at your self, just recognize the error and move on to your next drawing. Draw, draw, draw, and take classes in high school, college, from fellow artists that everybody chips in 5 bucks for a nude model. Draw the plants in your garden, draw your mom or dad's portrait when they fall asleep in their chair, or anybody else who's just relaxing. Draw your dog, brothers and sisters, friends, people at the coffee shop. You get the idea. Buy a strathmore Black bound Artist's sketch book, and don't tear out any of the pages. Sign and date all your drawings, and you will soon have a visual history of your sketches, and see your improvement. My son has had one of those Sketch books with him since he was ten, and I just sent him two more for his birthday at 35. I always give my students one of these Sketch books, and they take it from highschool to college and just keep drawing. Just draw and don't worry or think about the background right now, just draw everything around you and you will improve rapidly. I'm here to help when ever you need me...Sincerely
Annie
