Thank you! They are a beautiful Eagle, but I find them difficult to paint accurately. This one I am happy with.

Wonderful!

They are very impressive birds. Not only are they very well equipped predators, but they particpate in one of the most pulse pounding mating rituals of anything with wings!!!

The pair makes incredible flights - at times hovering or even flying backwards! They whirl around each other as the fly higher and higher.
From a great altitude, the pair will grasp each other's talons and plummet in a tight spiral that would have even most fighter jet pilots in an unwinnable fight for control of their lunch. It's a very dangerous aerial ballet. The bodies of pairs have been found with their talons entangled, so their separation and escape was impossible.
LOL! An act that seem to fly in the face of "survival"!

That is so amazing! I have never seen a movie or TV program about them, and have only seen them in the Zoo or in pictures on the internet. There are so many birds we see, admire, but know so little about. I've been reading about vultures, and find them fascinating. All birds of prey seem to be threatened by poisons, and many corvids, and smaller birds as well. It's a dangerous world out there!

For the Bateleurs, it's made even more so since their reproduction includes such risky behaviour.
If you've studied BOPs as I think you have to paint them so well, you'll have an understanding of the working dynamics of a talon and it's natural "lock-on-closure" ability. Having built-in locking visegrips for feet works great for those landings on branches and hanging onto struggling prey - it's not so hot for the quick getaways.
It's their feet and they use them for everything, they must know it's a very risky thing to do.
LOL! I've always thought of the Bateleurs as the Extreme Adenaline junkies of the Eagle clans...
Almost like they wish they were more Falcons. ;)
